Things We’ve Learned Since Starting a Preloved Clothing Business
Share
Starting KindOutfitCo has taught us a lot about clothes and even more about the way we shop.
When we started our preloved clothing business, the idea was fairly simple: find great clothes from brands people already know and love, give them another chance to be worn, and make buying second-hand feel just as easy as shopping new.
Since then, we've photographed, checked, measured, listed and packed a lot of clothes. Along the way, there have been a few things that have genuinely surprised us.
Here are some of the biggest things we've learned so far.
1. There are SO many great clothes already out there
This has probably been our biggest takeaway.
The sheer amount of good-quality clothing already in circulation is incredible.
We've come across pieces from Quiz, Zara, River Island & ASOS and plenty of other brands that still have years of wear left in them. Some have barely been worn at all.
It really makes you question how often we actually need to buy brand-new clothes.
There's already an enormous wardrobe out there waiting to be rediscovered.
2. High street sizing makes absolutely no sense
If you've ever been a size 10 in one shop, a 12 in another and somehow a 14 somewhere else – you're definitely not imagining it.
One thing handling clothes from lots of different brands has shown us is just how inconsistent women's sizing can be.
Even within the same brand, two items carrying the same size label can fit completely differently depending on the style, fabric and when they were made.
It's why we try to give as much useful information as we can in our listings rather than relying entirely on the number printed on the label. We've also created a handy size guide to help you along with way.
And it's also a good reminder:
The number on your clothes really is just a number.
3. Some older clothes feel better made
Not every older garment is better quality, of course, but we've definitely noticed that some older high street pieces feel surprisingly substantial compared with their newer equivalents.
Better-feeling fabrics, proper linings, stronger stitching and little finishing details can make a huge difference.
It's also one of the things that makes preloved shopping interesting.
You're not limited to what's currently sitting on the high street. You can find pieces from previous seasons – and occasionally things you simply wouldn't find made in quite the same way today.
4. Brand-new doesn't necessarily mean better
There's something psychologically satisfying about a brand-new item arriving in a bag with its tags attached.
But once you've handled enough preloved clothing, you realise how little difference there can sometimes be.
We've found pieces that have clearly been worn once or twice. We've found items that look almost untouched. And occasionally we find clothes that still have their original tags attached.
The difference is that somebody else paid the original retail price.
That's one of our favourite things about preloved fashion.
5. Free delivery matters more when the clothes are affordable
This was something we thought about carefully when setting up KindOutfitCo.
A £7 top doesn't feel quite such a bargain when several pounds are added for delivery at checkout.
So we decided to offer free UK delivery with no minimum spend.
If an item costs £8 on our website, we want £8 to actually mean £8.
Simple.
6. Photographing clothes is much harder than it looks
Anyone who has ever tried selling their own clothes online will understand this one.
Some garments look fantastic in real life and absolutely terrible on a hanger.
Black clothes can lose every detail. Floaty dresses suddenly look shapeless. Satin reflects everything. And don't get us started on trying to make trousers hang properly.
We've developed our own little tricks along the way, but photographing each individual piece has definitely given us a new appreciation for fashion photography.
7. Preloved shopping is much more fun when you treat it like treasure hunting
This might be our favourite thing about the whole business.
Traditional fashion websites might have 100 identical dresses available.
We usually have one.
That means browsing KindOutfitCo is constantly changing. Something from Zara might appear today, followed by a vintage-looking M&S dress tomorrow and a brilliant River Island bargain the day after.
And when something sells, that's generally it.
There isn't a warehouse containing another 200 of them.
It makes shopping feel a little more like finding something special.
8. Price doesn't always tell you which clothes people will love
We've learned not to assume we know which item will sell first.
Sometimes we'll list something and think:
"That will be gone tonight."
Three weeks later, it's still sitting there.
Then we'll upload something completely unexpected and it sells almost immediately.
Fashion is incredibly personal.
The item that isn't right for one person can be exactly what somebody else has been searching for.
And that's really the whole point of preloved.
9. Selling preloved clothes makes you think differently about your own wardrobe
When you spend your time looking at clothing through the lens of whether it still has life left in it, you start looking at your own wardrobe differently too.
Instead of automatically thinking "I don't wear this anymore", you start thinking:
"Someone else might absolutely love this."
Clothes don't become worthless simply because their first owner has finished with them.
Passing them on keeps them in use for longer – and gives somebody else the chance to enjoy them.
10. You don't need a huge budget to enjoy fashion
This is probably the biggest reason we started KindOutfitCo.
Fashion should be fun, but constantly buying new clothes can get expensive very quickly.
Preloved gives you another option.
You can experiment with a different style, try a brand you've never owned before, find something for a night out or simply give your wardrobe a refresh without spending a fortune.
And if buying something preloved means one perfectly good garment gets worn again instead of forgotten about, that's a pretty good bonus too.
We're still learning
We're still relatively early in the KindOutfitCo journey, and we're learning something new all the time.
What we do know is that there are far too many brilliant clothes already in existence to ignore them.
So we'll keep finding them, checking them, photographing them and adding them to the site – and hopefully helping more of them find their next wardrobe.
If you fancy doing a little treasure hunting yourself, take a look at our latest arrivals.
You never quite know what you're going to find.
